How Andover Got Its Name

There’s a fun local myth about how Andover was named. Andover became a town in 1857 and it was originally called Round Lake Township. During the 1970s it had a lot of rapid growth and was renamed Andover. The legend says that someone saw a train go off the tracks and fall down into a swamp and as it fell it rolled over and over and over so the town was called Andover. One of Andover’s previous residents, Maddy Rooney, won an Olympic Gold medal in the 2018 Olympic Games.

On the west side of Andover is Round Lake and Kelsey Lake Park which has beach access, paved trails for biking or roller blading, and walking trails too. The area also has Coon Rapids on the south side and Bunker Lake. Bunker Hills Park has one of the oldest Oak Savannahs which is one of the few remaining in Minnesota. You can horseback ride through the entire park or play disc gold on the course there. Grab a drink in the clubhouse, it’s really nice. You can also hike or bike on 10 miles of trails at Bunker Beach.
